Collection Instructions: |
The specimen is collected first thing in the morning before going to the bathroom or bathing.
The swube tube consists of a paddle with a sticky, "gummed" surface (labelled "sticky side") inserted into a plastic capped tube. To collect, the paddle is slowly pulled out of the tube and the sticky side is gently blotted against the skin surrounding the anus. This may require two or three blots. The paddle is then placed in the plastic tube and returned to the laboratory for testing. |

Additional Information: |
Since the female worms migrate to the anus to deposit eggs on a sporadic basis, a series of four to six specimens may be necessary to demonstrate the infection. |

Clinical Significance: |
Detection of pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) eggs indicates infection. The eggs are usually deposited around the anus and are not commonly seen in feces. |
