Preferred Specimen:

50 mL aliquot of a well mixed 24-hr urine collection using the LithoLink 24-hr urine collection kit.

Minimum Volume:

40 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine

Collection Instructions:

Follow the collection instructions included with the kit.

Patient preparation: Patients should stop taking Vitamin C (pill form, vitamins and/or supplements) that is greater than 100 mg/day 3 days prior to the start of the collection; Vitamin C occurring in foods and drinks can be ingested as normal.

Patient should start collecting Saturday – Tuesday. 
The collection should end Sunday – Wednesday to maximize stability.

Note: The preservative vial must be opened and the liquid emptied into the collection container at the START of the 24-hour collection. Also, drop the uncapped bottle and cap into the collection container to ensure the entire preservative is added.

Do not refrigerate the sample at any time during or after collection.

Record the total amount of urine in the orange jug at the end of the collection. Write the total volume of the orange jug on the properly labeled green-topped tube. The urine can be poured into the properly labeled green cap vial by either the collecting patient or the drop-off location staff.

Send the properly labeled green cap vial and the completed urine handout form included with the kit to HealthLab.

Frozen: unacceptable

Rejection Criteria:

Past stability (> than 96 hours), under or over collected (<22 hours or >26 hours), incorrect use of the Litholink preservative or the Litholink preservative not detected.
